Thanks to this technology, it is possible to sell everything from memes and digital art to physical objects and land in virtual space. Every day there are transactions all over the world, and the sums reach millions of dollars. This raises a perfectly logical question: why do people buy NFT? If you want to learn even more about NFTs – check out this ultimate guide to them by our CEO, Mykhailo Sitalo!

The digital economy is gaining steam and has now completed the transition from ordinary pictures to digital assets in which you can invest to start actively or passively income. Of course, the NFT could be that investment. That’s why today we’re going to take a closer look at why people buy NFTs. This material is more intended for NFT newcomers, but experienced crypto enthusiasts will also find useful information here.

The reason for the success of the NFT

Why are people buying NFTs? Cryptocurrencies are interchangeable, all coins are the same and do not differ in any way. NFTs are different from each other, they are unique, so they can represent unique things and confirm the ownership: artworks, digital images, personal items, the right to real estate, and others.

Unlike the standard model of such databases, there are no central nodes (all devices in the system simultaneously store all the data published in the blockchain). Many currencies operate on this principle. Tokens, in turn, are registered entries within this blockchain. The distinctive thing is the principle of interchangeability. However, it is clear that not all digital assets are non-fungible.

That is why the format of non-fungible tokens with blockchain technology was created in order to bring unique items here. Each of these tokens is unique and exists in a single instance, it cannot be separated, and all information about its author, buyer, and all operations with it is securely stored in the blockchain. In other words, an NFT is a digital certificate attached to a unique object which confirms the ownership. On this basis, it is clear that such tokens can be a good investment.

How many people are buying NFTs?

Crypto investors are constantly looking for new options to expand their portfolios and NFT fits perfectly here. Let’s review now the data analyzed for 2022:

If we look at the statistics, about 360,000 people currently own such tokens.

Each one sells approximately 12,000 NFTs.

Also, it was found that on any given day about 10,000 active wallets and about 6,000 unique buyers interact with NFT.

This indicates that a significant number of purchases are made for more than one token per day.

What is the reason people are buying NFTs?

The answer to why people buy NFTs can be found in the technology that supports them. We’ve already talked about this above. Because NFTs are difficult to copy, they provide a degree of assurance of their value. When a person buys such a token, he or she is guaranteed sole holding. That’s why people want to make such a profitable investment.

NFTs are also used as in-game assets. This can be proof of uniqueness and ownership of any in-game item, avatar, or collectible. These tokens are also actively used in the fashion industry, as they can register ownership of physical goods. NFT can act as an electronic ticket to obtain a pass to a certain event. NFTs can take many forms, including virtual clothing fashions that people can use in the digital world.

In addition, many of the items invented and sold as NFTs are unusual in their own right. People spend extra for them because the best artists have minted their exclusive paintings only once as NFTs. Also, buying an NFT is a good way to support your favorite artist, creator, or any other author. Finally, in the future, this asset can go up in value and you can sell the NFT to another person for a profit. This is another explanation for why people buy NFTs.

So, why don’t people just right-click on the picture and save it to their desktop? It’s free, after all. Yes, it is, but as with other collectors, whether it’s baseball cards, rare books, or fine art, buying and having the original is special. This is why people buy NFTs. In the meantime, collectors and crypto-enthusiasts are making great investments.

Can anyone make an NFT?

The creation process is very simple, and it’s really accessible to everyone. Here we need to elaborate a bit more and describe the process:

In order to create an NFT, you need to log in to an NFT market (token-selling platform) and upload a file. The process of creating such a token is called minting.

When creating it, most NFT markets ask if the file that is uploaded is unique (one of a kind), if there are copies of it, and if it is part of any collection.

Once you have completed the NFT creation process, bidding on the platform will begin.

This is why some people try to sell tweets and even colors. Digital artists can build royalties into their NFTs, even for future sales, which is why many artists see promise in NFTs: it can take middlemen out of the market and open up a new way to make money. So, artists, musicians, video makers, and bloggers from the NFT space can make money without intermediaries, receiving funds directly from the audience.

What do you get when you buy an NFT?

Normally an artist would have to go to a broker or dealer to sell their work, but selling an NFT collection allows for more direct interaction with art enthusiasts and better control over the handling of their creations. It’s also worth noting that NFTs are inextricably linked to collectibles, which have been a thriving market for generations.

NFT projects are a modern way of exchanging exclusive collectibles, whether artwork or in-game assets, in a multitude of ways. For a long time, the value of these items was questioned, and many people were perplexed as to why buy tokens as well as spent money on real paintings or ancient antiquities. Thus, we gave an answer to the question of why people buy NFTs. For the art lover or meme fan, these items are of great value and paying for them, whether directly or through NFT, is a wise investment.

The reason people buy NFTs today. Whether you are a beginner in the field of NFT or not, the most important thing is safety. And the right wallet will help you with it. So, MetaMask is one such wallet that makes the world of NFT available to you across multiple devices. You can use this wallet in a mobile app if you download it as well as in a browser on your computer. Many experts consider the MetaMask network the perfect wallet to keep NFT and other assets.

However, there may be problems with a view your NFTs in the MetaMask network at first. If you can't see NFTs in the MetaMask network, this can easily be solved. In fact, the inability to view NFTs in MetaMask is a very common issue encountered by token owners. Now we will quickly tell you how you can view NFTs in the MetaMask network, but first, we'll start with the basics, so that newcomers can get the hang of MetaMask faster.

Can MetaMask keep NFTs?

Of course, you can keep tokens in MetaMask. Users who cannot properly configure MetaMask and don't see their NFT tokens after the transaction, mistakenly assume that there are better options. MetaMask on mobile is also very convenient to use. So, MetaMask is a great option for tokens:

It supports NFT based on the ETH network, but can also be configured to support tokens from other networks.

Your NFT from the ETH network should automatically appear in MetaMask, it uses opensea.io and IPFS to extract its NFT data.

But this is not always the case. You will find that some of your NFTs in different networks may not view correctly, or sometimes not view at all.

Can you add NFTs to MetaMask or MetaMask mobile?

Your NFTs are always kept in MetaMask. Adding an NFT just lets you see the token in the MetaMask network. That's why you can only add NFTs you buy to MetaMask or MetaMask mobile app. It's just a way to view tokens you already have in MetaMask. Trying to add an asset that you don't own will result in an error in MetaMask, you can try and see for yourself.

Adding or importing an NFT to MetaMask is not equivalent to buying one on a marketplace like OpenSea. So, MetaMask and MetaMask mobile apps already hold assets you buy from marketplaces, whether you see them there or not. But being able to view them there is really useful.

How can you view NFT in MetaMask?

The MetaMask browser add-in does not support viewing NFTs in the ETH network, but there is a way out. If you originally set up MetaMask from your browser, you will have to import MetaMask to your mobile using a secret phrase.

Another important thing is that users cannot view or add NFTs in the Chrome add-in, but on the desktop, users can see NFTs on the portfolio site.

An Import MetaMask to mobile is very easy. However, the Web 2.0 we are using today does not seem so perfect to many users. The dominance of big tech companies and their control over our data is what Web 3.0 is supposed to change. And technologies associated with cryptocurrency may help.

The meaning

Web 3.0, or web3, yet only a concept, is the third iteration of the internet that can be described in the following terms: decentralized, blockchain-powered, and user-specific. It is based on the idea of a completely decentralized interconnected system of networks owned and governed by different users. This is what makes web3 similar to the concept of digital tokens.

The difference

The first iteration of the internet was a bunch of read-only, static web pages. In the mid-2000s, Web 2.0 added the ability to interact and produce content and introduced social media, online banking, and shopping — but this is all owned by large and powerful corporations such as Meta, Amazon, or Google.

With web3, people can build and govern their own decentralized, more democratic networks on the internet. We’re already seeing the first iteration of such networks in DAOs — decentralized autonomous organizations.

The web utopia

Web3 users will create their own self-governed platforms, profit from them, share posts and photos via nodes instead of Instagram, interact directly with each other without middlemen, and be sure their data is safe thanks to blockchain. Most likely, we’ll be able to tokenize everything we publish on the internet to protect our intellectual property.

Next-gen websites will also interact directly, without intermediaries like Google. This will create a more decentralized internet and reduce the influence of corporations and personal data leaks.

Web3 is also expected to boost the global economy by introducing accessible services to far-flung communities in various regions. Today, half the world’s population is excluded from the digital economy, and some don’t want to trust their data to Google. Another bonus for the global economy would be the greater adoption of fast and safe blockchain transactions.

The third iteration of the internet is slowly but surely becoming a reality. We will probably not notice the moment when we started living on web3 so that the transformation will be truly natural.

You have probably heard about USDT and other fiat-pegged cryptocurrencies, or even have some in your portfolio. They are the most popular stablecoins nowadays, and the largest players by market capitalization with $66 billion and $55 billion respectively.

To ensure the proper performance, fiat-pegged stablecoins must be thoroughly backed and transparently audited by trusted third parties.

Commodity-backed stablecoins

These stablecoins are backed by physical assets such as precious metals — certified gold or silver reserves. Some less popular coins are pegged by commodities, for example, crude oil or natural gas. Still, metals-backed cryptocurrencies are among the top-ranking ones, with Tether Gold (XAUT) and DigixGlobal (DGX) heading the list.

Algorithmic stablecoins

The most decentralized type of stablecoins, algorithmic, is considered to be the most trustworthy by many advanced crypto users. Algorithmic stablecoins focus on improving market price stability through pre-programmed supply for matching asset demand.

They are backed by other cryptocurrencies, and smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain automatically stabilize their value.

Maker’s DAI is thought to be the most trusted decentralized stablecoin. It runs on Ethereum and aims to support a value of $1.00. Unlike fiat-pegged centralized stablecoins, DAI isn’t backed by US dollar reserves.

Stablecoins and governments

Surprisingly, the idea of connecting real-world currencies to their blockchain-based analogues has been welcomed in many countries. The most recent example is the UK, which upgraded its regulation toward stablecoins. They now are 'digital settlement assets', which means they have potential to develop into a widespread means of payment.

In the US, the regulatory landscape for stablecoins is marked with uncertainty. However, stablecoins as a technology have achieved significant success, especially in the banking sector.

Meanwhile, in the EU stablecoins are still neither prohibited, nor regulated. Only Switzerland and Malta have built a friendly environment for their circulation.

Are stablecoins safe to invest in?

Normally, stablecoins maintain their pegged value and are less susceptible to volatility than cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. The issuing firm should guarantee it by keeping each user’s coin in fiat equivalent on its banking account.

Unfortunately, there were cases where stablecoins failed to maintain their value because of hacks and liquidity issues.

For instance, once-popular algorithmic stablecoin terraUSD (UST), which was supposed to maintain a $1 price, fell to $0.35 in May 2022. Its companion token LUNA, meant to stabilize UST's price, also collapsed to a few cents. That happened because $2 billion worth of UST appeared to be unstaked (taken off the blockchain protocol), leading to liquidation of coins.

So, how to use stablecoins?

By definition, stablecoins can’t grow in price with time, unlike typical cryptocurrencies. But they can be a good option if you want to protect your fiat money from inflation by purchasing digital US dollars.

Another great use case is trading stablecoins in pairs with other cryptocurrencies on exchanges. Typically, crypto/crypto pairs (e.g. USDT/BTC) are charged with less fees than fiat/crypto trading pairs (euro/BTC).

And the last, but not the least reason to invest in stablecoins is faster and cheaper P2P transactions. Indeed, sending money to another person via crypto wallet can save much time and dollars, compared to bank transfers.

["GET
