What are stablecoins?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stablecoins are a type of cryptocurrency that serve as a bridge between digital money and real-world assets. Typically, stablecoins should be pegged one-to-one and hold their value with underlying fiat currencies like the US dollar, euro, yen, etc. Fiat money is expected to be kept on banking accounts of the issuing firms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What stablecoins are there?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are many different types of stablecoins in the market with the respective backing of their underlying fiat currencies or commodities \u2014 hard physical assets such as gold or silver. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, there are also crypto-collateralized, or algorithmic stablecoins like Maker\u2019s DAI. Let\u2019s explore them all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fiat-backed coins<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This type of stablecoins is backed by and relies on a one-to-one ratio with its corresponding fiat currencies. The examples are Tether USDT and Circle USDC. They are the most popular stablecoins nowadays, and the largest players by market capitalization with $66 billion and $55 billion respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To ensure the proper performance, fiat-pegged stablecoins must be thoroughly backed and transparently audited by trusted third parties. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commodity-backed stablecoins<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

These stablecoins are backed by physical assets such as precious metals \u2014 certified gold or silver reserves. Some less popular coins are pegged by commodities, for example, crude oil or natural gas. Still, metals-backed cryptocurrencies are among the top-ranking ones, with Tether Gold (XAUT) and DigixGlobal (DGX) heading the list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Algorithmic stablecoins<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most decentralized type of stablecoins, algorithmic, is considered to be the most trustworthy by many advanced crypto users. Algorithmic stablecoins focus on improving market price stability through pre-programmed supply for matching asset demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are backed by other cryptocurrencies, and smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain automatically stabilize their value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maker\u2019s DAI is thought to be the most trusted decentralized stablecoin. It runs on Ethereum and aims to support a value of $1.00. Unlike fiat-pegged centralized stablecoins, DAI isn\u2019t backed by US dollar reserves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stablecoins and governments<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surprisingly, the idea of connecting real-world currencies to their blockchain-based analogues has been welcomed in many countries. The most recent example is the UK, which upgraded its regulation toward stablecoins. They now are ‘digital settlement assets’, which means they have potential to develop into a widespread means of payment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the US, the regulatory landscape for stablecoins is marked with uncertainty. However, stablecoins as a technology have achieved significant success, especially in the banking sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, in the EU stablecoins are still neither prohibited, nor regulated. Only Switzerland and Malta have built a friendly environment for their circulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are stablecoins safe to invest in?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Normally, stablecoins maintain their pegged value and are less susceptible to volatility than cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. The issuing firm should guarantee it by keeping each user\u2019s coin in fiat equivalent on its banking account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, there were cases where stablecoins failed to maintain their value because of hacks and liquidity issues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For instance, once-popular algorithmic stablecoin terraUSD (UST), which was supposed to maintain a $1 price, fell to $0.35 in May 2022. Its companion token LUNA, meant to stabilize UST’s price, also collapsed to a few cents. That happened because $2 billion worth of UST appeared to be unstaked (taken off the blockchain protocol), leading to liquidation of coins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, how to use stablecoins?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

By definition, stablecoins can\u2019t grow in price with time, unlike typical cryptocurrencies. But they can be a good option if you want to protect your fiat money from inflation by purchasing digital US dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another great use case is trading stablecoins in pairs with other cryptocurrencies on exchanges. Typically, crypto\/crypto pairs (e.g. USDT\/BTC) are charged with less fees than fiat\/crypto trading pairs (euro\/BTC). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Digital artwork is being sold for enormous money, competing with traditional forms of artistic expression. For example, the most expensive transaction occurred in March 2021, when \u2018The First 5000 Days\u2019 artwork was sold for $69.3 million! Of course, art comes in many forms. Musicians sometimes pre-release their albums before actual release or sell a \u201cshare\u201d in the album, allowing investors to earn respective \u201cdividends\u201d from the album sales. \u201cWhen You See Yourself\u201d by Kings of Leon is an example of an album sold as multiple NFTs. Musicians are digging into various forms of NFTs. One of the founders of Heavy Metal, Ozzy Osbourne, has his NFT collection, CryptoBatz, which is marketed to connect with other NFTs like Bored Ape Yacht Club pictures. Memes, as an undeniable art of the XXI century, memes are objects of the NFT market as well. Sometimes, heroes of the meme are the actual people who sell them, like Kyle Craven, who has sold the \u201cBad Luck Brian\u201d meme with his face on it for $36,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3) Play to earn\/Metaverse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NFT technology has firmly planted itself into gaming, giving rise to Play2Earn formats. P2E games allow in-game rewards and created characters to be converted into NFTs and pieces of Metaverse. The virtual social world, like a real one, has a personality, and items that the character has in possession (ranging from land to fashionable clothes) are the most important thing in games focused on social connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4) Domain names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cryptodomains may not be fully supported by some browsers yet. Still, these blockchain-minted domains provide unique functionality like linking to crypto-wallets, and they are obtained much easier than traditional domains while simultaneously not depending on any centralized authority. The most popular domain is \u201c.eth,\u201d and this market is only expected to grow and gain more support shortly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5) Tickets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tickets for various events can also be minted as NFTs through blockchain, so it becomes possible to buy them with cryptocurrencies, further linking blockchain technologies to the real world and allowing cryptocurrency to function as money. This also eliminates the possibility of forgery and opens additional opportunities for the ticket owner to sell it later as an essential piece of history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6) Sports moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ticket sale is not the only NFT category connected to sports events. Sports Memorabilia NFTs are a hot market because each token is genuinely unique, a memorable sports moment clip, so it cannot be replicated. One of the most expensive sports memorabilia is a clip of LeBron James dunking the ball during the American NBA Championship sold for over $380,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7) Real-world assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NFTs can be used in the real world, as seen before. Real World Asset NFT (rwaNFT) is a token that proves ownership of a physical object, so it functions just like a regular NFT, but the asset tied to the NFT is not digital. NFTs of this type have the potential to be the future of legal ownership of real assets because they can theoretically establish legal contracts of ownership, warranty, and insurance and be transparent and impossible to forge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8) Everything else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The world of NFT is vast, and literally, everything can be minted into an NFT, so this list can never be exhaustive. Brief NFT history has had a lot of examples that could not fit into any category presented, for instance, tweets, blogs, posts on social media, and many other forms of assets that fall under the unique definition of a Non-fungible Token.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To conclude, the nature of NFT technology allows for almost anything to be sold on the free market digitally or otherwise while ensuring transparency and irrefutability of transactions.
